Grave in Hinnom Valley across from Mt. Zion

Gehenna means hell or hellfire. It comes from the Hebrew ge-hinnom, literally “valley of Hinnom,” the name of a valley south of the old city of Jerusalem. In Old Testament times this valley had been a site for child sacrifice.

Josh. 15:8. It had been the place where the idolatrous Jews burned their children alive to Mispar and Baal. A particular part of the valley was called Topheth, or the “fire-stove,” where the children were burned.

Mt. Zion

When David took it from the Jebusites (Josh. 15:63; 2 Sam. 5:7) he built on it a citadel and a palace, and it became “the city of David” (1 Kings 8:1; 2 Kings 19:21, 31; 1 Chr. 11:5). In thelater books of the Old Testament this name was sometimes used (Ps. 87:2; 149:2; Isa. 33:14;Joel 2:1) to denote Jerusalem in general, and sometimes God’s chosen Israel (Ps. 51:18; 87:5).In the New Testament (see SION) it is used sometimes to denote the Church of God (Heb.12:22), and sometimes the heavenly city (Rev. 14:1). Isaiah 40: 6 The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: 7The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. 8The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

Zechariah 12:9

9And it shall come to
pass in that day,
that I will seek to
destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
10And I will pour upon
the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace
and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and
they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for
his only son, and shall be in
bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for
his firstborn.

Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: 33So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.
